Community Surgery Center Howard - Kokomo (outpatient - ambulatory surgery center)

About the Program

-The program is a full-time, paid, six-month long orientation into the operating room (OR) that will focus on both theory and skill; with supportive instructions, demonstrations and clinical experience necessary to actively scrub and circulate on a variety of surgical procedures.

-Monday-Friday, Variable day hours during the six-month long orientation. 40-hour per week commitment. (No scheduled time off will be granted during the orientation due to the intensity of the program.).

-The program offers integrated learning experiences of classroom instruction, followed by hands-on clinical rotations in the OR department where the candidate is hired. Participants are exposed to both the circulating and the scrub roles, under the direction of experienced and skilled on-site preceptors.

-The program will utilize Association of Perioperative Registered Nurses (AORN) Periop 101 curriculum.

-Selected applicants will be hired to work at their respective locations.

-A two-year, signed work commitment is required of any candidate hired to participate in the program. Due to the intensity and complexity of the program, participants need to allow two years to fully develop their skills in the operating room.


-Classroom lectures include - but are not limited to - aseptic technique, prepping, gowning, gloving, instrument names, suture selection, laparoscopic procedures and draping.

-Candidates will attend core circulating and scrub classes throughout the six-month program.

-Lectures specific to each surgical department will occur at each respective hospital location.

Clinical Experience

-Circulating rotation for 11 weeks at the site where the candidate has been hired.

-Scrub rotation for 10 weeks at the site where the candidate has been hired.


-Must be a graduate of NLN or CCNE accredited nursing program for Registered Nurses.

-Must have a current and valid Indiana RN license OR if a new RN graduate, will be hired in as a Graduate Intern and must obtain RN licensure within 45 days of hire.

-Must be able to articulate reasons for your strong interest in working in the Operating Room environment.
