This position will have a variety of different functions inclusive of Asset Management for the Indianapolis facility. The position is an early career or entry level role in the business organization and will focus on gaining the necessary skills and knowledge base to enable a successful career in Covanta. As the successful candidate grows their managerial capabilities, the role will have an increasing amount of independence for decision making.

This position will have certain responsibilities related to the financial goals and targets for the Company’s asset at Indianapolis. This includes performing annual budgeting and forecasting activities for waste procurement, for the integrity of the Company’s Long-Term Economic Model, and for reviewing with senior managers the overall budget and forecast of the asset. The role will interact and collaborate with Covanta’s Asset Management and Supply Chain groups, and specifically Facility Management teams, to ensure accuracy of financial data and thresholds for decision making purposes on a short and long-term basis. They must be able to engage in constructive dialogue, use logic and problem-solving skills resulting in a thoughtful decision-making process in order to achieve success in the role and for the company.

The role will help conduct waste (fuel) procurement, fuel supply monitoring and planning, and other asset management and development activities at the Covanta Indianapolis facility. The individual will be required to gain a full knowledge of revenue generating activities including waste agreements as well as expense and capital items related to facility operations, improvements, and operational byproducts (residues). They will also have visibility and input into services provided by other disciplines of Covanta including waste procurement, energy opportunities, residue management and community outreach and must establish credibility and reputation among the key stakeholders (Employees/Client/Political/Industry leaders). They will be one of the primary points of contact with the Corporate Communications group for the specific asset within their purview. In this role, the Business Analyst must be able to originate and task a goal-oriented team of multi-disciplined managers in a way to harmoniously effectuate revenue growth and profit improvement of our asset base. Pending further dialogue and discussion, the successful candidate may be included in a job rotation to another Covanta Facility outside of Indiana after an initial 18-24 months as part of a career development and experience exploration.


  • Fuel (waste) Supply management in coordination with Sales and Operational teams

  • Review budgets and forecasts, review economic and operating performance, perform variance analysis, recommend and implement solutions and ensure pro forma financials are updated (P&L management)

  • Coordinate activities with various internal disciplines to ensure adequate planning and review occurs in the areas of asset preservation, revenue maximization, regulatory, and contract compliance

  • Manage applicable commercial and municipal contracts and work with internal subject matter experts/disciplines to derive maximum value (includes risk management) of the agreements

  • Establish and maintain various external relationships including local communities and regulatory agencies

  • Anticipate emerging market and regulatory changes, and develop mitigating and/or opportunistic plans to maximize value of the asset

  • Asset improvement & development focused on revenue and margin growth (Asset strategy)

  • Effectuate prompt reliable service delivery to Covanta customer base

  • Manage and direct stakeholders at all levels – including internal and external senior executive and/or elected level decision makers

  • Strategy development and/or strategy implementation

Position Requirements

REQUIREMENTS (Education, Skills, Certificate, Licenses, Experience):

  • Education: Bachelor's degree required. A Bachelor’s degree in engineering or business/finance or commensurate experience preferred.

  • Strong manager, team player with commensurate leadership skills

  • Prior knowledge and experience managing profit and loss, budgets and forecasts in an industrial/production environment or commensurate experience in our existing Energy-from-Waste business required

  • Must possess strong business acumen that highlights proactive thinking with detail-oriented and creative problem-solving approach

  • Solid analytical, planning and organizational skills and ability to multi-task

  • Highly developed verbal and written communication and negotiation skills

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
